Concha Beach

If you’re looking to avoid the lines and hassle of getting out to the more touristic beaches in Parque Tayrona, or if you have already been to that side of the park and found it lacking in fun activities like snorkeling – this is the day trip for you!  We designed this unique day trip to Bahia Concha to give you more than just a day at a beautiful beach – lunch with the locals, travel like the locals and ride on the back of a motorbike down dirt/jungle roads, cliff jumping (or cliff jump watching) up to 14 meters, and snorkeling – all in one day!

We  pick you up from your hotel/hostel in the Santa Marta  area at 11 AM.

lunchTravel by taxi to the guide’s family home.  Where you stop for lunch.  Food served family style – so everyone enjoys the same home made dish of either fish, beef or chicken (we do accommodate for vegetarians or special dietary restrictions, please let us know at the time of booking).  You get a nice cultural exchange with the family.  We’ve had people describe being in the neighborhood and with the family as “the real Colombia,” it’s a part of Colombia you wouldn’t normally see on your travels!

From the house, each person in the group gets his very own personal motorbike driver.  Most locals get around by motorbike, so you get a unique view into the local culture.  On the motorbike you travel down quieter dirt roads.  The second half of the drive is completely covered jungle, single track lanes.  We’ve seen hundreds of big blue crabs on the side of the road, and woodpeckers in the trees.

From the entrance, it is a flat 15-20 minute walk to the beach.

Jump

Out of the jungle and off the bikes, we head to some cliff jumping.  This activity is totally optional, at your own risk, if you’re feeling into it!  There are different jump off spots (or the let yourself into the water option, no jumping required), one at roughly 6 meters (12 feet) or the highest at 14 meters (40 feet).

From the cliff jumping we head to the main part of the beach.  And hang out on the beach.  For the people that are interested, the guide takes you snorkeling.  We provide the snorkel masks.  Now, it totally depends on the visibility and the day, but I have done some of the best snorkeling from the secret areas we know about on this beach.  We’ve seen baby squids, octopuses, lobsters, crabs, eels, blow fish, super colorful and bright tropical fish, and large schools of fish.

You have the rest of the afternoon at the beach and then head back the way we came – motorbike to house, where we switch to car and head back to your hotel/hostel.  Arrive back around 6 or 7 PM.

Price includes – transport there and back, lunch, some non alcoholic beverages (not water, so please bring your own for the day), use of snorkel masks, guide for the day.  Cash only please.  Please note, you will not be required to pay entrance fees to the park (or any additional entrance fees on this tour).  This specific beach inside the park does not charge the normal entrance fees to Tayrona National Park.  While they do charge a lesser toll to use certain roads to get to the beach, you will not be required to pay these either (because we use alternate roads).

Suggested things to bring: sunglasses, sunblock, hat, towel, camera, swimsuit, flip flops/sandals, closed toed shoes for the motorbike, drinking water.  A little extra cash if you want –  alcohol (you can purchase cold beer in the neighborhood for lunch or at the beach), additional beverages, and/or if you want to tip your guide.  Please take care of your belongings, we cannot be responsible for lost or damaged items.

***If you are on a tighter schedule, we can start the trip at 8 AM and finish anytime you choose from 1- 3 PM (depending on how soon you need to be back).  This option would perhaps be for those planning on traveling to Cartagena the same day by bus, as the last buses to Cartagena leave around 4 PM, or whom plan on traveling elsewhere the same day.***
